Practical strategies to support struggling readers in secondary settings
What are the benefits to practice?
This course equips secondary school teaching assistants with the knowledge, strategies, and confidence to support students who have gaps in their phonic knowledge. While phonics is often associated with early education, many older students continue to struggle with decoding, fluency, and spelling due to insecure foundations.
Through a structured, practical approach, mentors will learn how to identify specific gaps, deliver targeted phonics support in an age-appropriate way, and build students’ confidence as readers. The course blends theory with hands-on strategies, ensuring mentors can apply learning immediately in one-to-one and small-group interventions.
By the end of the course, mentors will be able to deliver focused, adaptive support that improves reading accuracy, fluency, and engagement, helping students reconnect with reading and access the wider curriculum.
